History of NGS

Nativity Girls’ School was founded by Abba Gebremikael Mekonnen, who was the parish priest of Nativity Cathedral in the year 1952. There were 50 students enrolled at the start, comprising both boys and girls, and Abba Gebremikael became the first director of the school. In a short span of three years, the school grew to 800 children, which posed an administrative problem. Hence, in 1955, the separation of boys from girls, namely Nativity Boys’ and Nativity Girls’ Schools, took place. The girls’ school continued to be under the direction of Abba Gebremikael Mekonnen until October 1956, when the Franciscan Sisters of St.Mary of the Angels from Angers (France) were invited to take over its direction. There were 370 girls ranging from grades 1 to 4 with 13 members on the staff, of whom 6 were sisters. The growth of the school was remarkable, as in three years there was a batch of 10 young girls prepared for the grade 8 Ministry exams in March 1965 with 66 students, and we had 100% results. Ten years after its foundation, the school had 950 students enrolled with 26 staff members, among whom 8 were sisters.

Due to the influx of students, the old building of six classrooms, which was falling into ruins, was replaced by a modern building of 12 rooms in 1960.

Seven years later a second wing consisting of 6 additional classrooms, a hall, a library, staff rooms, and a dining room was added to the existing block because of the steady growth of the school. In 1976 there were 1209 students with 32 members on the staff, 5 administrative personnel, and 15 general service workers.

At the time of the school’s Silver Jubilee in 1981, it had already reached its maximum capacity with 1417 students.

The “Parents’ Committee” was formed in 1964, and ever since, they have remained active collaborators and advisors for the growth, progress, and quality of education and discipline in the institution. But in the year 1992, the parents committee was dissolved. A new parents’ committee was elected by the parents on 4.6.05. This would start functioning from the new scholastic year, September 2005.

Currently, the school is working hard to extend its educational services through enhancing quality education integrated with discipline. Believing that education and discipline are like two wings that enable students to play a great role in society, NGS puts great emphasis on both elements. In the 2017-18 academic year, 2200 students have been enrolled.
